Psychological Purpose The psychological purpose behind Paper V is to finish the research paper you have been working on all semester. Once the semester is over, you will be able to combine all your papers into one and use them on job or graduate school applications. This is why you should work very hard on adopting our feedback and improving it – so that you make a great impression on employers and universities The Abstract is one of the first items readers see. You need to convey a lot of information in this very short paragraph, as the potential reader will decide whether to read your full paper based on the information in the Abstract. There are several elements needed in the Abstract about both of your studies, including information about: a). your research questions, b). your participants, c). your experimental methodology, d). your findings, and e). your conclusions. Being able to write a precise yet succinct Abstract takes some effort, so make sure you go through several drafts before settling on your final version. Make sure to include keywords / key phrases as well (remember entering keywords into PsycInfo when you searched for articles? The authors actually recommended those keywords, so if you want to increase the number of times your paper comes up for readers, use good keywords!) Your General Discussion section will also be new in Paper V. Here, you will summarize your results from BOTH studies and draw conclusions, but you will NOT use statistics again. This section will evaluate both of your studies and see if (and how) they connect and lead you to general conclusions. That is, your general discussion is the end of your story, so make sure to tie it back to information that you presented throughout both of your studies. You can also identify flaws in your study designs as well as propose new directions for future research in this section. 2). APA Formatting Purpose Paper V should follow all APA formatting guidelines. See our feedback on prior papers, use Chapter 14 in your textbook, and look at the instructions on the next page for help with formatting 3). Writing Purpose Paper V is your final paper in the course, and it should reflect the skills and knowledge you have developed throughout the semester. You should be able to convey information to an educated reader, but one who is unfamiliar with your specific study and the content area. More importantly, many students use Paper V as their writing sample for graduate school or job applications, thus your paper should be grammatically correct and easy to read yet informative for a reader who may have little to no knowledge of your specific topic. Thus, educate your reader, but keep in mind that your reader is probably intelligent. 3 Note that the plagiarism limit for Paper V is 25%. I expect less overlap in your lit reviews and discussions than in the methods / results. As usual, references, citations, and predictions are not included in the plagiarism limit. 4 Instructions for Paper V: Final Paper (Worth 30 Points) 1. Title Page: I expect the following format a. This Title Page section will be one (1) page in proper APA format 2. Abstract NEW SECTION a. The Abstract starts on its own page, with the word Abstract centered and bolded. b. A Running head is not needed, as per APA 7th edition standards. If you have one, ensure it is properly formatted. c. Make sure there is a page number on the Abstract page. d. The abstract should be between 150 and 200 words, and must include ALL of the following elements i. Identify your general problem or research question ii. Note your participants iii. Note your experimental method (i.e., participants were randomly assigned to conditions) iv. Note your findings for both studies v. Note your conclusions about the studies as a whole e. Keywords / phrases are required for your paper (at least 5 keywords or phrases) 3. General Discussion NEW SECTION a. Write the word General Discussion at the top of this section, centered and bolded. This section comes directly after the Abstract, but starts on its own page. b. At the beginning of this section, give a brief reminder of your predictions from both study one and study two. Then provide a discussion of your results. In plain English (not statistics), tell me what you found. In this discussion, you should talk about all of the following: i. An explanation of your findings – across both studies, did your results support or not support your hypothesis? 1. If you found support, tie it in with the prior research you cited in your literature review as well as your predictions. You may want to refer back to your literature review, and re-cite some of the studies you mentioned there (I really recommend that, in fact!). 2. If you didn’t find any support for your hypotheses, contrast your findings with prior research. You can highlight differences in your methodologies. You may also find other studies that either support your results or help explain why you found what you found. 3. If one study found support and the other did not, try to explain the discrepancy. 4. In a nutshell, tell me how both studies help inform the reader about the nature of your variables and how they impact human behavior. ii. Next, examine study limitations – would other methods have been better? Were there problems with your study that a follow-up study should fix? iii. Propose future directions for research – If you could do your studies over again, what would you change? Or how might you expand them? iv. Optional: Talk about the ethics of your study – Did you follow ethical guidelines? Were participants harmed in any manner? 5 c. The general discussion section must have minimum of one (1) full page of text and a maximum of three (3) pages. If it is only one page, it better be very, very good! I actually expect to see closer to two pages. 4. Overall writing quality a. Make sure you check your paper for proper spelling and grammar. The Writing Center is available if you want someone to look over your paper (an extra eye is always good!) and give you advice. Other Guidelines for Paper V: The Final Paper § § § § 1). Pay attention to the page length requirements 2). Page size is 8 1/2 X 11” with all 4 margins set at on inch on all sides. You must use a consistent 12-point font. Double space EVERYTHING. 3). PLEASE use a spell checker to avoid unnecessary errors. Proofread everything you write. I actually recommend reading some sentences aloud to see if they flow well, or getting family or friends to read your work. Finally, go look at the supporting documents for this paper. Like prior papers, there is a checklist, a grade rubric, and an example paper for Paper V. All will give you more information about what we are specifically looking for as well as a visual example of how to put it all together in your paper. Good luck! Running Head: PAPER IV: METHODS, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION PAPER Paper IV: Methods, Results, and Discussion Paper Stephanie Pineiro March 29, 2021 Florida International University 1 PAPER IV: METHODS, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION PAPER 2 Methods Study Two Participants: There were 205 people who participated in this study. Most of them were college students, and some of them were family members. Pertaining to the demographics of these participants, 100 were men and 105 were women. This comprises 49% of men and 51% of women participants in this study. About age factor of participants, their ages were 18 to 77 (M = 24.00, SD = 3.50). About race/ethnicity factor, the 205 participants are divided as follow: Table 1: Division Of The Race/Ethnicity Of The Participants. race/ethnicity Number of participants/ frequency percentage Caucasian 56 27.3% Hispanic 89 43.4% Native American 10 4.9% African American 31 15.1% Asian 8 3.9% Other 11 5.4% Materials and Procedure: About materials for this study, the questionnaire document with pens was utilized. Pertaining to the procedure, the participants first were described the purpose of this study. This includes the investigation about the impression of participants on the fake news they read on social media, such as Facebook. The participants were also described that their contribution to fill this questionnaire would take only 5 to 10 minutes of their time. Next, it was explained to PAPER IV: METHODS, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION PAPER 3 them that this questionnaire would involve two parts. The first part is about reviewing the images of fake news posted on Facebook, and the second part would involve their input to fill the questions about the Facebook posts. The benefit of this study is also explained to the participants, and their consent was also taken as a matter of ethics for conducting any research study. In the first part of the questionnaire, participants were asked to closely observe the content of the provided fake news post by a Facebook user named Corey McMillan. This part included a fake news post by a Facebook user named Corey McMillan and then the responses of people about this post. These responses were divided into 4 variables. These areas follow: 1. Rude Disagree / Without Apology 2. Rude Disagree / With Apology 3. Polite Disagree / Without Apology 4. Polite Disagree / With Apology In the first section of the second part of the questionnaire, participants were asked to avoid looking back and rate their impressions about the Facebook post author, Corey McMillan. In the second section of the second part of the questionnaire, participants were asked to avoid looking back and rate their impressions about the comments and replies posted by Peyton Halliburton and Riley Anderson, for the Facebook post author, Corey McMillan. In the third section of the second part of the questionnaire, participants were asked to provide their demographic information that they could not fill where feel hesitant to answer. This demographic information includes gender types, age, race/ethnicity, their relation with FIU, and their political affiliation. In the last section of the second part of the questionnaire, participants were asked to provide their impressions in terms of ratings about the attention checks. PAPER IV: METHODS, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION PAPER 4 After the questionnaire part of ratings, participants were explained about this study in detail by means of the debriefing statement that also include the advantages that could be expected in the future from this study to the benefits of the people. Lastly, the correct name input was asked from the participants in the questionnaire. Results Study Two Continuing with the first study hypothesis for this research paper, the study will also discuss the second independent variable for it. As per the present hypothesis, misleading propaganda on social media is the first independent variable, the credibility of the source is the second independent variable, and more antisocial behavior is the dependent variable. According to the manipulation check, antisocial behavior as the result was significant, X2(2) =98.1, p<0.05. The participants of the entire group found antisocial behavior with percentages of 96.1%, 0%, and 21% respectively. ANOVA analysis indicated that there were substantial differences among the independent variables i.e. misleading propaganda on social media and credibility of the source and the result in analysis revealed that antisocial behavior, F (3, 205) = 17.641, P = 0.000. Whereas the other manipulation results indicated that the study respondent was more likely to associate antisocial behavior to independent variables i.e. misleading propaganda on social media (M=0.98, SD = 1.22) than the credibility of the source (M=0.97, SD=0.19). The post analysis revealed that there was an insignificant difference between the misleading propaganda on social media and the credibility of the source whereas it revealed that the mean difference is significant at the 0.05 level between the misleading propaganda on social media and the credibility of the source. PAPER IV: METHODS, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION PAPER 5 Also, the study analyzed how age was associated with misleading propaganda on social media and the credibility of the source. Chi-Squares test using the independent variables of the misleading propaganda on social media and credibility of the source and age association with antisocial behavior as the dependent variable. The results indicated that the relationship between age and posts that the author made was significant, F (3, 205) = 98.392. The results show that the likelihood ratio was 123.3; thus, the author’s ages have effects on how he posts either of the antisocial behavior. Also, the Chi-square test was used to analyze the association between participant assertion and conditions. Thus, individual biases of the respondent or how individual behavior on posting is affecting his or her opinions on author posting behavior. The test revealed that there was a relationship between the participant assertion and the author of the post made with significant, F (3, 205) =189.99 and likelihood of 179.770. As well chi-square test of antisocial behavior association with misleading propaganda on social media and credibility of the source revealed that the significance, F (3, 205) = 38.311 and likelihood of 33.745. Appendix VI Discussion Section Based on the results of the Chi-square and ANOVA, the study revealed that the participants associated antisocial behavior. Also, the study revealed that there was a difference in how participants rate antisocial behavior. As well the study show there was significant in relationship between age and posts trend of the author. Thus, under the 5% significance level, the hypothesis was statistically significant.
