Use participant observation to describe the participants, the interaction, norms of interaction involved, etc. 4. Visit a rehabilitation facility, prison, mental hospital, or nursing home and report your observations using the concept of total institution for analysis. 5. Shop at a store catering to low income people in a poor section of town and at a similar type (grocery, clothing, hardware) store catering to high-income people in a wealthy part of town. Compare and contrast the visits with regard to general condition, attitudes of customers and clerks and prices. 6. Attend a rock concert, athletic event or revival. Analyze the event using collective behavior theory. 7. Attend religious services at a church different from your own. Describe the experience in terms of format, tone, ideology, liturgy, etc. 8. Analyze several television commercials or prime time shows for the subtle messages about class, gender, or values they are sending. 9. Interview at least 10 people about their political beliefs and activity. Develop a short list of questions covering political party affiliation, level of political engagement, and opinions on key political issues to use in the interviews. Compare and contrast their responses. 10. Develop a case study of an individual by interviewing a person about early influences on his career, life style choice, and/or philosophy. Possible subjects include clergy member, substance abuser, police officer, politician, homeless person, or anyone whose career or life interests you.
