I think I would benefit from the push and motivation provided as a client receiving therapy from a reality therapy practitioner. The client is encouraged to bracket out irrelevant details to the present and to choices they currently have open: “clients are not expected to backtrack into the past or get sidetracked into talking about symptoms” (11-3c). I think such an approach focusing solely on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in the here-and-now with less concern for the past and symptoms would be useful and interesting to try out. Such an approach which stresses choice and making the most of the present appeals to me. If I hear someone inquiring about what it was that would explain everything about their current condition I always think, “What will you do to change your condition now, regardless of what was the origin?” Additionally, the sense of urgency of reality therapy can be strong motivation for making immediate changes which ultimately build up to greater life changes (11-3c).

I think I would appreciate having a therapist who provides this sense of immediacy, and I think it would increase my direction and commitment provided that the motivation is done in a which works toward both characteristics of quantity and quality of change. For instance, it can be great to make changes very early on in therapy, but it is important to make changes which work for the particular client. Also, some changes will have more staying power than others, and I think it is important that the therapist check for regressions to old, undesirable behaviors. Overall, I think I would find the sense of vigilance and excitement engendered by this form of therapy refreshing. I think that the changes made throughout the therapeutic process in reality therapy can have a lot of spillover effects to other areas of life, encouraging myself as the client to take more initiative in different areas of my life.
