Narco-terrorism is a global problem that is not only seen to be part of the continued growth of organized drug crime but also more powerful than traditional drug syndicates and drug cartels since it is characterized by more autonomy and the possession of paramilitary strength. With such power, narco-terrorism has seen the emergence of narco states where those involved in the drug trade use their economic, political, and paramilitary strength to infiltrate the center of power and influence national and regional politics. The emergence of West Africa as an illegal drug trade hub increases the threat of global narco-terrorism. Previously, the region has had very little association with the drug trade. But in the last decade or so, drug trafficking organizations from Latin America have taken advantage of West Africa’s most vulnerable countries ,such as Guinea Bissau, that lack the capacity to control their coasts and airspaces to entrench and widen their global narcotic distribution networks. Using ships and planes, they are able to bring in large quantities of drugs into the region. The presence of drug traffic organizations in West Africa is more than a drug problem. The phenomena possess a serious threat to the region’s stability as well as global security. It is already a major concern for the UN Security Council. The affected countries are likely to become shell states. They might be sovereign in name but their governance will be infiltrated by criminals in cahoots with corrupt government officials who have the potential to turn the 2 countries into narco states to help serve the needs of the drug trafficking industry. The survival of these states will be jeopardized. Further, considering that the drug trade is trans-national, its impact is bound to felt far and wide. The phenomenon is a threat to United States.
