Discussions and Assignment – Financial Decision Making

Discussions

  1. Contents of a Annual Report

Discuss the following scenario: Staff members from the marketing department of your firm are doing a splendid job selling products to customers.  Many of the customers are so pleased, in fact, that they are also buying shares in the company’s stock, which means that they receive a copy of the firm’s annual report.  Unfortunately, questions sometimes arise that the marketing staff members are woefully inadequate at answering.  Technical questions about the firm’s financial condition and performance are referred to the chief financial officer, but the director of marketing has asked you to write a memo in which you explain the key elements in an annual report so that marketing representatives are better prepared to respond to questions of a more general nature.  Write a clear, concise memo (no more than 250 words) that describes the contents of an annual report so marketing personnel can understand the basic requirements of an annual report. Respond to at least two of your fellow students’ postings.
  2. Financial Statement Analysis

The financial statement analysis is due in Week Six.  To help you begin your preparation of this work, select a company that you will do the analysis of.  Write at least a 200 word summary identifying the firm that you selected, summarizing why you selected it, and explaining the items that a financial analyst might find useful within its Annual Report.  Respond to at least two of your fellow students’ postings.

To complete the following assignment, go to this week’s Assignment link in the left navigation.

Eastman Kodak 1

Each chapter in the textbook contains a continuation of this problem.  The objective is to learn how to do a comprehensive financial statement analysis in steps as you learn the content of each chapter.  Keep this in mind as you complete each week’s written assignment.  Complete the below required steps (a – c) and write a 3- page paper summarizing your findings.

  • The financial statement analysis template (click on “Excel Template” in the left navigation) can be found at the text companion website.  Once you have linked to the template you should see a window that asks whether you want to enable the macros.  You must click on “Enable Macros” to use the template. (You may have to change the security settings on your computer in order to use this feature.) Familiarize yourself with the instructions in the template.  The tab for the instructions is at the bottom of your screen and is labeled “ReadMe”.  Print out (or save) a copy of the instructions to be used for all the Eastman Kodak problems in each chapter of the text.  Click on the link at the bottom of the screen labeled “Cover”.  Enter all of the required data in the template for Eastman Kodak.  Use the instructions to help you locate the necessary information.  The amount for “Rent Expense” can be found in Note 11 under the heading “Other Commitments and Contingencies”.  When filling in the cash flow data use the cash flow numbers for continuing operations only. Save the cover sheet when it is completed for submission to your instructor.  Save the template in order to use it with subsequent problems in later chapters.
  • Access newspaper and periodical articles about Eastman Kodak to learn of any information that would be helpful in understanding the company’s financial condition as well as future plans.  Summarize what you learn.
  • Using the Eastman Kodak 2007 Annual Report and Form10-K, review Items 1, 3, and 4 of the Form10-K as well as the Report of Independent Registered Public Accounting Firm found in Item 8.  Write a concise summary of the important items learned from reading these items.

The book is Fraser, L. M., & Ormiston, A. (2010) Understanding financial statements (9th ed.).  Upper Saddle River, NJ:  Pearson Prentice Hall.  ISBN 0136086241.  Please let me know if you have this book or not.

Describe the Differences and Similarities of the Views on Social Responsibility

You will be reading Chapter 7 of the textbook and an
article titled “Demography of Aging in China and the United States and
the Economic Well-Being of Their Older Populations” (found in the
ProQuest database, in the Ashford University Library) to prepare for
this discussion. In addition, you will watch “Family Care for Aging Parents.”

In “Demography of Aging in China and the United States and the Economic
Well-Being of Their Older Populations,” you are introduced to the roles
of the family and government in the East as well as in the West.

Describe the differences and similarities you learned about in terms of
the views on social responsibility when caring for a rapidly increasing
older population. What are the reasons for these differences between the
treatment of the aged in the West as compared to those in the East? Are
those reasons more cultural or practical? Explain your answer.

When looking at the role of family as a support system for the aging in
later life, is there a social responsibility in the United States for
family members to absorb some of the needs of their aging family
members? Why or why not?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your
claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other
scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

GROUP PROJECT: ABBREVIATED MARKETING PLAN

The goal of the group project is to provide you with a simulated experience in addressing a real-life marketing problem, i.e. you will be creating an “original” product concept, gaining an understanding of a particular market, deciding which customers to target, and developing the marketing mix required to introduce your product concept. You will develop this project from the perspective of a start-up company that has budgeted $500,000 for its introductory marketing campaign.

The five interim assignments (as well as the final report and presentation) provide integrated, comprehensive coverage of the topics contained in the text.  A description of the overall project as well as each assignment is found below. Each assignment is due on the day identified in the course outline and must be submitted electronically as an e-mail attachment.  You are expected to present your work in a professional manner and will be graded on content, presentation, grammar, spelling and appearanceEach write-up should be formatted as an executive, memo-style report.  They must be typed (APA format: cover sheet, 12 point font, double spaced; inline citations, and reference page. Seehttp://www.psywww.com/resource/apacrib.htm for details) and should include appropriate use of headings and sub-headings.  All pages should be numbered.

Interim Assignments:  Your group will develop five written briefs (three-six pages in length; plus cover page, bibliography and exhibits) that describe specific elements of your marketing plan and the rationale for choosing them.  These are assigned periodically to coincide with our coverage of those topics during the semester, and to enable you to receive feedback prior to your final report and presentation.

Written Final Report and Oral Presentation:  Your group will integrate the interim assignments into a single comprehensive final report (not to exceed twenty-five pages; plus bibliography and exhibits).  This will serve as the basis for your group’s oral presentation (15 to 20 minutes in length) that highlights your marketing strategy and why you have chosen it.

Assignment #1:  Situation Analysis/Utilizing Secondary Sources of Information

(WORTH:  60 points; DUE:  Saturday, February 22, 2014

Objectives:

1.  To improve your understanding of the nature of product markets.

2.  To create an awareness of the competitive climate and general environmental conditions your company would be facing.

3.  To familiarize you with the types of secondary data used in marketing research to develop situation analyses.

Exercises:

1. Specify your tentative product concept. This can be a tangible good or an intangible service.  (As you progress through the interim assignments you may choose to refine, or possibly change this.)

2. Find the NAICS/SIC code (corresponding to a manufacturing industry, if a tangible good, or retail industry, if an intangible service) that most closely describes your product category.  Also list the NAICS/SIC codes related to existing products that are closely related to your new product.  Use economic census data from the U.S. Census Bureau and/or other relevant sources to find and report the total sales for the U.S. and number of competitors in those industries.  Provide attributions and full citations of all sources of information that you use.[1]

3. Use the on-line Business & Economics databases available through the Towson University Cook Library (e.g., Business Source Complete, Factiva, Lexis-Nexis Academic)and any other relevant databases to search for information related to your product concept.  Print the abstract or provide a brief synopsis of any articles that relate to your product concept.  Provide attributions and full citations of all sources of information that you use.

4. Based on your determination of an NAICS/SIC code for your new product, use electronic and/or print databases (e.g.,Million Dollar Database, Encyclopedia of Emerging Industries, Encyclopedia of Global Industries, Standard & Poors NetAdvantage, Mergent Online, Wall Street Journal), and/or Internet-based resources to look up information on present (direct or indirect) and potential competitors. (If articles are found and cited, list the title of the article, date and publication in an exhibit titled “References.”  Identify the 3-5 firms that you feel will be your most important competitors.  Then briefly summarize their product(s), their likely target(s), and overall competitive stance, i.e., discuss their product lines, market share, competitive strengths and weaknesses and speculate on what moves they might make in response to the introduction of your product/service into the market. Provide attributions and full citations of all sources of information that you use.

5. Prepare a partial SWOT analysis, i.e., specify the Opportunities and Threats that your firm faces.

[1]  Failure to thoroughly document all sources of information is tantamount to plagiarism.  You must clearly distinguish between information and insights provided by credible sources versus those that are you own suppositions or conclusions.

Case Study 1: Martin

Martin, a behavior analyst, is working with Sara, a 14-year-old girl with severe developmental delays who exhibits self-injurious behavior (SIB). The self-injurious behaviors included pulling her hair, biting her arm and banging her head against the wall. After conducting a functional analysis, Martin decided to employ an intervention program consisting of differential reinforcement of other (DRO) desired behavior. Martin collected data on Sara’s SIB before and during the intervention. Below is a depiction of the data that Martin collected:

Sara’s Frequency of SIB
BASELINE  Occurrences DRO Occurrences
22 5
25 5
27 3
26 2

Address the following questions, and complete the following requirements:

  1. Create a basic line graph using Microsoft Excel, to be included in your Word document. The graph should depict the data provided in this case study. You should only need to create one graph, with SIB depicted, both in baseline and in intervention.
  2. What type of research design did Martin employ when working with Sara?
  3. According to the data, did the intervention that Martin selected work in modifying Sara’s self-injurious behavior?
  4. Martin had considered using an ABAB reversal design when working with Sara. What are some ethical implications of selecting a reversal design when working with the type of behavior problems that Sara was exhibiting?
  5. Martin’s supervisor requested this graph of the data he collected when working with Sara. Why are graphs useful in evaluating behavioral change?
  6. Discuss what a functional relationship is and how an ABA professional would use his/her understanding of functional relationships when designing an intervention. Identify whether the graph that your created using the data provided in this section depicts a functional relationship.

Write a Case Study Based on the Given Standard

506 Final Project: Case Study

For your final project, you will write a 6-8 page case study
paper that describes a hypothetical person in two stages of life development.
View the person as a hypothetical client if you are studying Applied Behavioral
Analysis (ABA) or Addictions or as a participant in a longitudinal research
study if you are studying General Psychology. The goal of this paper is for you
to present a developmental profile of a person in two consecutive stages of
life (e.g., early and middle childhood) explaining their individual growth
using biological, social, psychosocial, cognitive, and environmental theories.
Select developmental periods that interest you and that correspond to your
future career plans. For example, if you are studying to be an addictions
specialist and want to work with adolescents, you might select adolescence and
early adulthood. Customize your project to your specific interests.

To submit your paper, DO NOT SUBMIT THIS ASSIGNMENT TO THE
DROPBOX. Place this assignment on the portfolio website as instructed in the
“MSP Portfolio” tab in the Course Home.

To begin, select the scenario that corresponds to your
concentration track, and then, choose two successive developmental stages.
Create an outline of the client’s different developmental features during each
of the developmental periods. Write a paper that follows the sample case study
format (see below the scenarios). You must use at least five primary source
references that are from peer-reviewed journals and the class text.

Applied Behavioral Analysis

Client: Jackson

Age range: you decide- example early adulthood (20-40 yrs.)
to middle adulthood (40-60 yrs.).

Jackson has developed phobias over the last few years,
specifically to spiders, heights, and germs. He (or his parents if you make him
a child) is uncertain as to when they began or how. However, the fear is
debilitating and prevents him from being able to function in his life.

Questions to use to guide your response:

  1. What are the main features of
Jackson’s cognitive, social, biological, and psychosocial development
during two developmental periods? Explain the ones that are relevant to
    your proposed therapy interventions.
  2. Which therapeutic interventions
would you suggest for helping him to reduce the fear? (Hint: Again,
consider his developmental period in order to create appropriate
    interventions.)
  3. Predict some developmental issues
that might contribute to the phobias or
  4. prevent treatment from working.

Addictions

Client: Michelle

Age range: you decide- example early adulthood (20-40 yrs.)
to middle adulthood (40-60 yrs.).

Michelle has been referred to you because she was arrested
last week for possession of heroin with intent to distribute. She also tested
positive for heroin and marijuana adding to her charges. She has no history of
prior treatment and is unwilling to enter treatment now, though she was court
ordered.

Questions to use to guide your response:

  1. What are the main features of
Michelle’s cognitive, social, biological, and psychosocial development
during two developmental periods? Explain the ones that are relevant to
    your proposed therapy interventions.
  2. Propose some developmentally
appropriate interventions that could be used to help Michelle to reduce
    her cravings.
  3. Predict some developmental issues
that might contribute to the addiction problems or prevent treatment from
    working.

General Psychology

Participant: Patrick

Age range: you decide- example adolescence (12-17 yrs.) to
early adulthood (20-40 yrs.).

You are studying the development of people who lived in New
Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Your participants lost everything, including
at least one close family member. Your particular interest is in studying
issues faced by them (including possible developmental problems) related to
moving away from New Orleans, loss of house, loss of a family member, and
change in economic status. To study these effects, you are conducting a
longitudinal study using the same population, interviewed annually over many
years to collect data. The main interest is in gathering data related to the
specific effects of experiencing a disaster on social, biological,
psychological, psychosocial, and cognitive development of different-aged
people.

Patrick is one of your subjects who was forced to live in
Texas temporarily and then moved to New Jersey before returning to New Orleans
three years later.

Questions to guide your response:

  1. What are the main features of
Patrick’s cognitive, social, biological, emotional, and psychosocial
development during two developmental periods? Hypothesize the reasons for
any developmental problems that you find.
  2. Predict the results of your
findings for people in the two developmental periods and suggest
interventions or strategies for reducing the effects of exposure to
    disasters.
  3. Propose further studies that could
be created to explore your predicted findings.

Case Study Suggested Format and Strategies

Research

Begin by selecting two developmental periods (remember that
they need to be consecutive) and research the typical expectations for
cognitive, social, moral, and biological development. Then conduct research
using a peer- reviewed journal such as Developmental Psychology or Child
Development to determine what kinds of developmental problems might arise in
your chosen scenario.

Use that research and knowledge of developmental theory to
create your hypothetical client/participant case study.

Writing Case Studies

  1. Introduction: Describe the
problems to be solved including specific information about the
client/participant. Be clear in explaining the exact problem(s) or
research question(s) so that your reader will be able to understand the
    rest of the case study.
  2. Background: In this section,
describe in detail the specific developmental issues and pertinent
background that would help to explain why the client/participant is
experiencing problems in the present. Typically, this section includes the
age the problem started and any specific information from the past that
relates to the current problems (e.g., child of an alcoholic).
  3. Current State: In this section,
explain the client/participant’s strategies for handling the problem(s).
Explain the client/participant’s current developmental stages, making sure
that you only focus on those that apply to the problem. For example, if
your client is being treated for a cognitive problem, you wouldn’t explain
his or her social development in great detail, unless it is relevant to
    the problem.
  4. Suggested Interventions: In this
section, explain how the client/participant might benefit from specific
treatments or interventions. Remember to use peer reviewed research to
    support your ideas.
  5. Conclusion: Provide a brief
re-statement of the problem and ideas for future study to help others who
    have the same problems.
